The Annual Graduate Student Retreat at the Harrison Lewis Centre is usually held in mid September (Friday evening - Sunday morning). On Saturday we organize a hike for those that are interested, BBQ on Friday night, and a big potluck on Saturday night, we hang out around the fire both nights, hopefully hours and hours of beach soccer, and some informal presentations/discussions (hopefully down on the beach again) to help the new students better understand what to expect during their time in Dal.
The centre has both camping and lodging options available, we also have use of the facility's kitchen/dining area, and as last year proved this space is also a great spot to stay high and dry if the weather turns sour! We have a limited amount of extra camping gear if anyone needs some, and we will be carpooling out, so we really like people who have a car :-).
Everyone that made it out last year would probably agree it was a great time, and we are really looking forward to doing this again this fall. BOGS works hard to make this weekend as inexpensive as possible ($20 if tenting and $30 for a cabin bunk for the entire weekend). There is a sign-up sheet in Biology 4050, so come on down (with your money if possible but not necessary yet) and get on the list as space is limited (the centre can hold somewhere in the neighbourhood of 30 people).
Students, significant others, faculty and pets welcome! . Last year was an awesome event, and a great way for new students to settle into the department.
This year the retreat will be held September 23-25, 2016!
